10 Must have items for AW18

Barbour Stapleton Morris Sandstone Brown Cord Shirt

With a continual regress to trends of years past sees the return of the 70s inspired corduroy as a running theme throughout the AW18 landscape. This is perfectly encapsulated by the Barbour Stapleton Shirt. I have picked out the brown version as it has a more autumnal feel to it but it is also available in navy too.

The beauty of cord is that it is hard wearing and can be used not only as a work wear piece but as a fashionable alternative to canvas or a cotton variety of some kind. Through the changing autumnal months it can be worn as a top layer over a t-shirt, a long with simple selvage denim and a leather boot for that classic rustic worker look. Add a jacket and/or knit on top of that for the winter to give you a perfect outfit against the weather. There is plenty of cord on offer site wide with British brand Folk, opting for the baby cord option, again in shirt form,  giving you a lighter option. Farah have also got in on the act and have the wonderful Kingsland Cord Jacket, which is an amazing option for the winter with its fleece lining and collar. Finally Ralph Lauren, the American powerhouse, have continued their delve into seasons past and come up with the Fun Cap, with it’s 4 colour design it will give a dash of colour to any outfit you include it with.

Aquascutum Lionel Tartan Shirt

Tartan, most often associated with kilt clad Scotsman is very much in this season. Tartan and checks are a must for AW18, with many brands making a conscious effort to incorporate the classic pattern into their collections. Aquascutum, known for their classic club check, have been one of the brands who have made a decision to go for a full tartan design, with the Lionel shirt. The all over tartan pattern is a brushed cotton, which makes it the perfect go to piece for the winter months and can be worn with some indigo denim and brown boots or shoes.

Other brands have also jumped on the tartan bandwagon with Barbour offering all sorts of different items in a tartan print, it should be said that they do this for most of their AW collections. You can find yourself a tartan umbrella, note pad, cooler bag and shirts. If you want to get your four legged friend some matching tartan bits too there are also dog coats, beds and collars. One brand you may not associate with tartan is Armani Exchange, but if you needed anymore convincing that tartan is in this season then the appearance of the Blue Mini-Tartan Shirt in their collection is proof enough!

Fred Perry Reissues Mie Tobacco Waxed Harrington Jacket

It can be hard to state that a colour is a trend for a season, especially for AW collections, as there are so many staple colours for seasons, you tend to see bright colours in Summer and more earthy colours in Winter. This season however brown is a trend and yes it tends to be part of most AW collections but for AW18 the variety of browns makes it a trend. Take the Fred Perry Tobacco Waxed Harrington Jacket, not only is it brown but it is a distinct shade of brown. Other variations this season see the introduction of Caramel, Chocolate and Tan, with even beige’s becoming more brown. With the waxed finish this jacket is ideal for the autumnal showers that we are all too accustom to and is also lightweight and durable enough to be worn through the early autumn to the start of spring.

Other brands to look out for who have used the varying brown colours this season are C.P. Company, how have introduced the Chocolate Crew Neck into their collection and a more rusty brown Nylon Pullover Hoodie. Folk have gone for a Caramel option with the Caramel Brown Hoodie being a standout piece of their collection and Armani Exchange have stuck with the same colour, this time teaming it up with Navy, to create the Navy & Caramel Wool Colourblock Zip Hoodie.

Polo Ralph Lauren Bear Custom Slim Fit Red Polo Shirt

Ralph Lauren is one of the worlds foremost fashion brands with their polo player logo synonymous with affordable quality and style. Over the past few seasons PRL has been reintroducing 90’s favourite bear back into their collections, with it replacing the usual polo player. The polo shirt is available in 3 different colourways and features a embroidered bear on the chest, with super-soft cotton pique and their Custom Slim fit.

Not only is it appearing on the chest of polo shirts, like in this instance but it is also on logo t-shirts, jumpers and accessories. With plenty of personas you are sure to find a bear that suits you.

Emporio Armani Striped Navy Marl Knitted Cotton Sweater

Knitwear is a must have for the Autumn and Winter seasons, it is the perfect layering piece worn over a shirt, polo or t-shirt and can really help pull an outfit together. This Armani Exchange piece is a great example of this offering a marl finish, as well as block colours. Made from 100% fine yarn cotton, making it warm and breathable, offering plenty of versatility to your wardrobe.

The beauty of knitwear is the differing styles and compositions that you can get. Some further highlight pieces are the Polo Ralph Lauren cable-knit sweaters, offering a different texture with a chunkier feel. There are also a number of woolen pieces on offer with the Barbour Rhine Jumper and the Folk Ctyptic Sweater offering something different. The Barbour piece is a waffle knit and combined with the wool composition will give you that heavyweight knit feel for those winter walks.

Albam Fleece Zip Through Quarry Blue Fleece

Fleece is back and not just for your gran when she needs to head out to the shops but as an actual trend. There are plenty of brands that have produced some killer fleeces for this AW season and they are all amazing, none more so than the Albam Zip Thourgh Fleece. In a neutral colour this can be used to add an extra layer for comfort and against the cold or a top layer on the more temperate autumn days. Combing the comfort and cosiness of fleece with a contemporary silhouette, this is a must have for the autumn.

More household names, amongst them Barbour and Edwin have also offered up their take on the Autumnal fleece. The Egremont Fleece from Barbour Beacon, is another example of now fleece is now for the stylish. Available in Olive and Navy it is another piece to seriously look into investing in. Edwin have cast their creative minds in a different direction and come up with a mix of camo, a massive trend for the past few seasons and fleece, leading to a contemporary fleece from the Japanese brand in the shape of the Insulate Camo Fleece. All in all it looks like fleece is an autumn must.

CP Company Washed Khaki Hooded Overshirt

Overshirts, something that over the past 3/4 seasons have become a larger part of the menswear landscape. Not quite a jacket and not quite a shirt, what it is though is an all round must have to be added to any mans wardrobe. They are a pivotal part of layering and can be used as a top layer or a mid layer meaning that they are as versatile as they are stylish. This season there seems to be even more around in a multitude of styles but we have opted for the CP Company Washed Khaki one because it is everything you want in an overshirt. It is perfecty adept as a jacket in its own right, if you showed up to the pub in it no one would know it wasn’t but equally it can be worn with a heavyweight jacket over the top of it adding more depth to an outfit.

Like I said overshirts have been an ever expanding category in the menswear world and other brands such as BOSS and Rag & Bone have some great offerings this season. The Rebus Overshirt from Boss is a military inspired piece that has a rustic feel with some classic military styles and a washed out look. The Rag & Bone Overshirt is a more tailored piece that offers that structure of a jacket in a more shirt like form.

Tommy Hilfiger Medieval Blue Padded Anorak

Very much a 90’s trend that has been re-imagined for AW18, the overhead jacket is prevalent in a number of collections. The Tommy Hilfiger Padded Anorak is a great example of how a contemporary redesign can make an old school item relevant again. It has loads of cool details that make it functional, from the hood with adjustable drawstring on it to the concealed pockets. The jacket is filled with technical fibers to provide quality insulation for a superior outdoor experience. It is also available in a couple of colourways meaning you can fit it to your preferences.

If you are wanting something similar but with a little less branding on then you can look at the other brands that have gone with an overhead option such as Armor Lux and Pretty Green. Armor Lux’s Water Repellent Smock is similar to the Tommy Hilfiger item but is made from a water repellent cotton blend and features very minimal branding. Pretty Green have also gone for a similar design but have also dropped a full length overhead jacket, that has shades of a parka. The Wyndham Seam Sealed Jacket is more lightweight but is more technical in its construction with sealed seams to keep the winter weather out.

Diemme Hiking Boots

Boots are normally a winter staple, perfect for keeping the winter weather off your feet and providing a durable yet stylish option. This season is no different but what is especially on trend is hiking boots. In the same vein as the fleece, hiking clothing is in as a fashion trend and the prefect boot to keep you up to date and on the hiking chic trend are Diemme’s offering. Offering an authentic hiking look whilst being super stylish, bringing the two worlds together. Signature d-ring and stop hook laces and a solid nubuck upper they can be worn with jeans, shirt and a fleece to complete a casual look.

If the hiking chic look isn’t for you then don’t worry, there are plenty of other styles you can get your teeth into. Red Wing have the classic Chukka Boot which is the a brilliant combination of a boot and a shoe, made from the finest leather to provide a boot that can last a lifetime. If you are after a more formal boot then you can have a look at the Tricker’s Stow Brogue Derby Boot, which is hand crafted in the UK. With the sturdiness of a boot but the style and sharpness of a brogue you are getting one hell of a shoe if you go for these.

Armani Exchange Navy Rubber Taping Bomber Sweat

Lastly on our list is the Armani Exchange Taping Tracksuit, a casual, sporty piece showcasing another of the trends for AW18 in taped tracksuits. These have minimal branding on the front and back of the garment but focus on the taped arms and legs to show the branding, this often leads to a really nice tonal breakup of the garments colour. The tracksuit can be worn on it’s own but also as a mid layer to that you are able to throw a jacket on over the top.

Other brands are also getting involved in the taping trend with Diesel offering a funnel necked tracksuit that has heavy taped branding on the side, this can be worn in very much the same way as the Armani version. HUGO have also gone for a jogging bottom with a more subtle taping for those of you that are less branding centric.
