This Autumn / Winter 16 Barbour have taken inspiration from it’s iconic and symbolic Beacon that stands at the mouth of the River Tyne. This piece of history was first erected in 1882, and Barbour have designed a range that takes the name of each of the eight bells that were used to regulate the sailor’s duty watches when on board ship. They re-imagine the classic styles in their portfolio into individual and contemporary pieces that mirror this voyage of discovery from the heart of it’s heritage.

Each jacket has exceptional attention to detail in the technical features that still encompass the style that is true to Barbour.

With this range Barbour wanted to find out a little more on what various pillars in the industry thought, so they sat down with our Buyer, Gavin Crossland.

Tell us a little bit about the history/background of Woodhouse.

“Woodhouse has just celebrated our 40th anniversary and is an iconic London brand of the 70s & 80s providing premium menswear. We see the Woodhouse customer as a style conscious, hard working guy who’s looking for tasteful and high quality fashion to set him aside from the crowd.”

How long have you worked for Woodhouse? What made you want to work for there?

“I have worked at Woodhouse for 5 years now. I really liked the independent feel and also the history that has a real rich heritage. Business’ like Woodhouse are a dying breed now and independent stores need more support these days. This is why Woodhouse and Barbour are particularly well matched.”

What does the day in a life of a fashion buyer at Woodhouse look like?

“It involves a lot of travelling, visiting a lot of London Tradeshows and viewing collections seasons in advance means I have to predict trends, so basically a lot of preempting, as I buy 6 months in advance. Once the product starts to filter into our HQ I focus my efforts on helping sell the product by passing my knowledge around our teams. I love my job and feel very lucky with what I do day to day – sometimes it doesn’t feel like work at all!”

Your store is based in Notting Hill, London, what clothing style do you find to be the most popular in that area?

“Notting Hill is definitely a unique area, and one of the coolest places I’ve worked. You get such a diverse customer base here; there are a lot of creative types but also business minded guys that prefer more subtle and discerning brands like Barbour.”

What qualities do you look for when taking a brand on at Woodhouse?

“It has to fit our Woodhouse customers profile. We work hard to find out what demographic that people have found fits their lifestyle and which are likely to succeed in our portfolio. The main aspects are style and quality with functional and versatile pieces and a key feature would be for the brand to fit in with the typical Woodhouse lifestyle.”

How long have you been stocking Barbour and why did you decide it was a good fit for your Notting Hill Woodhouse store?

“We have had a long established relationship with the brand Barbour and it has stood the test of time with our customers. It has key heritage, with pieces that transcend trends whilst remaining with the times. The brand is also great for our Notting Hill store as a lot of the guys who shop here own houses in the country and Barbour encompasses both aspects of their lifestyle. The Night Watch range is perfect as it fits this criteria of versatile and functional clothing whilst looking stylish and modern. We’ve already seen a great reaction even before the brunt of the winter weather arrives because the collection holds a couple of great transitional jackets.”

Woodhouse stocks the new AW16 Barbour Night Watch collection, what about this collection did you think would appeal to your customers?

“I think it is a great collection because it really holds on to Barbour’s heritage whilst shining a light on the story inspired by the iconic beacon synonymous with the brand itself. With real attention to detail on the functional aspects that have been developed with new technologies over the years, Barbour have created a collection that exceeds expectation and brings a whole new dimension to the labels that excites the fans and our customers of the brand.

The collection caters for the modern man and with it being predominately black and dark colours it gives a smarter look with a premium and modern touch that allows for more versatile wearing.”
