Fred John Perry was born on the 18th of May 1909 and lived a long life of 86 years. A world class Tennis player, he won major honours that included 8 Grand Slam and 2 Pro Slam single titles, not just that, he also won six major doubles titles. Fred Perry won the Wimbledon Championships three times consecutively and at this time, he was considered the worlds best tennis player. Until Andy Murray, Fred Perry was the last tennis player from Britain to win the Men’s Wimbledon Championship.
Fred Perry was the first player ever to win a “Career Grand Slam”, and amazingly, he did all this at just 26. No other player from Britain has achieved this. He was also recognised as one the best table tennis players, he won the championship in the year 1929. Perry was also part of the British Davis Cup Team and led the team to four consecutive victories from 1933 to 1936, with wins over France in 1933, the United States in 1934 and 1935, and Australia in 1936. Perry competed in a total of 20 Davis Cup matches, winning 34 of his 38 rubbers in singles, and 11 out of 14 in doubles.
Despite his huge contribution to British tennis, both as an individual and as part of a team, Perry was not accorded full recognition by tennis authorities until later in life. This is due to the fact that between 1927 and 1967, the International Lawn Tennis Federation, ignored amateur champions who later turned professional. Finally in 1984, Perry was given the recognition he deserved with a statue unveiled at Wimbledon.
