Beginning life under the name “Dobbs Industries ” in 1957. The company was started by Samuel Gelber and Robert Lane who had worked together for several years prior to forming Dobbs. The companies initial work was as a subcontractor for the U.S. Department of Defence making MA. 1 flight jackets and N-2B parkas.
After Gelber and Lane went their separate ways Gelber found a new partner in Herman “Breezy” Wynn and set up a new company “Alpha Industries” in 1959. In the December, just two months after its founding, Alpha won its first Department of Defence contract and began producing the N -3B parka.
By the 1960’s Alpha Industries had become one of the biggest manufacturers for the U.S. armed forces recognised for several iconic styles including the MA- 1 flight jacket, L- 2B flight jacket and N- 2B parka. The iconic MA- 1 has been in production for over 50 years and remains a top selling jacket.
Alpha moved into the commercial market in the early 1970’s. The only difference in the product for the U.S armed forces and the commercial market was slight changes in colour. To save the packing department a headache and help them distinguish between the otherwise identical jackets Alpha began adding three parallel lines to the label. This addition has now become an integral part of the Alpha branding.
