The Lacoste legacy was born in 1933 with Rene Lacoste incorporating the then separate worlds of men’s fashion and sportswear. Not wanting to compromise between elegance and comfort he created the white cotton polo shirt that we now know as the ‘1212’.
Lacoste gained the name ‘Le Crocodile’ in 1923 after a bet he had with the Captain of the French Davis cup team, Allan H Muhr, who promised him an alligator suitcase if he won. The nick name became synonymous with Rene’s tenacity whilst on the court, he was known well for never letting go of his prey! The actual crocodile logo embroidered shirt we have all come to know and love was born through an association with André Gillier, the owner and chairman of France’s largest knitwear manufacturing firm at the time. The qualities of comfort and solidarity were paramount in all that they did, qualities which still shine through today.
79 years on and plenty of strawberry and creams later, Lacoste now stands as one of the most recognisable and sought after fashion brands in the industry. It’s that rich history and quirky foundation that makes it a brand that we love so much.
The SS’12 collection brings us a fresh, lively take on those somewhat timeless classics. Why not take the opportunity to inject some colour into your wardrobe with a vibrant polo, or even a cheeky striped number??
This summer it’s Lacoste all the way for us – Game, set & match!
