2015 marks the 60th anniversary of one of our favourite brands – Original Penguin. To celebrate, the New York based brand have been hosting a series of music themed events throughout the year (with more to be revealed soon!) working closely with a variety of different artists. This time it was the turn of Slaves, who performed a surprise gig in Manchester’s Picadilly Gardens – the first of six Original Penguin ‘Plugged In’ gigs to be performed this year.

Slaves are a two-piece punk band from Turnbridge Wells in Kent. They self-released their first EP “Sugar Coated Bitter Truth” in 2012, but it’s 2015 that has been their year, with the release of their official debut album ‘Are You Satisfied?‘ reaching number 8 in it’s first week in the UK album charts.

Within seconds of the first sound out of Laurie Vincent’s guitar, fans quickly jumped up from their chilled out spots on the grass to run towards the pair, surrounding them as they performed. Vocalist and drummer Isaac Holman communicated with the crowd throughout and had soon enough convinced them to start crowd surfing in the gardens – before doing so himself of course. If the success of their first album, sold out shows and adoring fan base (as we witnessed on the day of their performance!) are anything to go by, the duo are definitely ones to watch.
