Popular for its punk, grunge and mid-western connotations which will forever be re-emerging trends in fashion, plaid is once again making a comeback this season. Plaid and wide-check shirts are definitely a must-have for your wardrobe this autumn, not only are they on trend but are the perfect additional layer as we start to feel the temperatures drop.
A History Lesson on Plaid
Plaid and tartan cloth patterns go as far back as the 1500’s, originating in Scotland and later being appropriated by British manufacturers where the fabric was held in high-esteem with British royalty. Possibly one of the best (and little known) facts about the fabric is that it was forbidden in Britain during the 18th century due to its association with the Scottish rebellion in 1975.
During the 19th century the pattern made its leap to the U.S where it was given a popularity boost by Midwestern brand Woolrich when they created ‘Buffalo Plaid’ in the 1850’s, which became a staple for outdoor professionals – most notably lumberjacks.
In the 1970’s plaid and checks returned as a form of liberated, rebellious style adopted by the punk movement, with the intention of putting an anarchic spin (usually by ripping and shredding the fabric) on a material associated with the monarchy. Following on from its rebellious connotations in the 70’s, plaid shirts became a symbol of the grunge movement in the early 1990’s, with bands such as Nirvana and Pearl Jam rocking the pattern as part of their signature style.
